General Strategies for Teaching ELL Students:
-Cultivate relationships through conversations outside of the classroom
-Provide a nurturing and conducive working/learning environment by creating rules and guidelines
-Learn about the cultural background of your students
-Allow more processing time
-Honour the “silence period”
-Differentiate – And use multiple modalities
-Provide scaffolding
-Allow for a variety of alternative assignments
-Discuss topics that students find interesting and are familiar with
-Don’t be afraid of using technology! (Apps like google translate, duolingo etc)
-Use formative assessment so you can monitor student learning and provide ongoing feedback so students know where they are at
-Focus on the bigger picture
-Incorporate more group work (Flexible Grouping)
